Planting Instructions
Plan Ahead - Your Tree Will Grow
Plant your tree where it will not interfere with buildings,
overhead utility lines, pavement, or intersection
sightlines as it gets bigger. Make sure your planting spot
is at least 3 feet from pavement or fencing on all sides;
15 feet from buildings or other trees. If you want a large
tree that will grow taller than 30 feet, do not plant it
within 25 feet of overhead electric wires.
Planting Instructions
- Carefully remove any excess soil from around the
trunk down to the tops of the main roots. Remove any
circling or girdling roots.
- Measure the height and width of the root ball to
determine how deep and wide to dig. Dig a hole just
as deep as the height of the root ball and 2 times as
wide.
- Cut away the root container, keeping the root ball
intact. For balled-and-burlapped trees remove any
wire cage and peel back burlap into the planting hole.
- Backfill with the excavated soil
Water with at least 5 gallons of water
- Lay a ring of mulch 2-4 inches deep around the tree
without touching the trunk. Mulch and bark should
never meet.
- Remove any wrapping or twine from trunk or
branches.
- When planting, prune only broken or dead branches.
Trees need as many leaves as possible to recover from
transplant shock.
